Determining whether your child needs a cognitive assessment involves considering various signs and symptoms across different areas of development. Here are some indicators that may suggest a need for a cognitive assessment:
Academic Struggles:
- Persistent difficulties in acquiring basic academic skills, such as reading, writing, and math, that are not in line with the child's age or grade level.
Learning Disabilities:
- Signs of learning disabilities, including challenges with reading (dyslexia), writing (dysgraphia), or math (dyscalculia), which may affect the child's academic performance.
Speech and Language Delays:
- Significant delays or difficulties in speech and language development that impact communication skills.
Social or Behavioural Challenges:
- Behavioural issues or social difficulties that are not explained by environmental factors, such as family problems or significant life changes.
Developmental Delays:
- Delays in achieving developmental milestones, such as walking, talking, or social interactions, compared to peers of the same age.
Memory Concerns:
- Persistent difficulties with memory, both short-term and long-term, which may affect the child's ability to learn and retain information.
Giftedness or Exceptional Abilities:
- Indications of advanced cognitive abilities or giftedness that may warrant educational enrichment or specialized programs.
Cognitive testing can help with:
- Creating an individualized Education Plans (IEPs):

- Assess a child's cognitive strengths and weaknesses to understand their individual learning style and cognitive profile.
- Gauge the extent and influence of intellectual disabilities on a child's learning, offering practical strategies for classroom support.
- Supply relevant details for school or government funding applications, teaching assistance, and special provisions.
- Recognise intellectual giftedness in children.
- Early Intervention:

- Early identification of cognitive strengths and weaknesses allows for timely intervention and support. This can be crucial in addressing potential learning difficulties and providing targeted interventions to help the child succeed academically.
Includes:
- 4 hours of cognitive testing and assessments for both child and parent (in person)
- Parent observer report (able to be completed at home)
- Teacher observer reports (able to be completed outside of sessions)
- Access to school reports and school report review
- 1 hour feedback session (offered via Telehealth)
- Comprehensive Diagnostic summary and Report that provides:
- Recommendations for school support and environmental adaptations
- Recommendations on how to support your child.
- Recommendations for contact with a broader health care team if appropriate
- Recommendations for ongoing therapeutic support
A non-refundable 20% deposit is required to secure a booking. After pay is available. Full payment is due before the initial session.
Note: You may be eligible for a rebate for a cognitive assessment from your private health insurance, contact them to ascertain if that applies to your level of cover.
Before your first session reception will email you some intake and registration forms and an initial psychological test for you to complete on behalf of your child. These must all be completed 48 hours before your first session, or your appointment may have to be rescheduled. It allows your psychologist to prepare for your child’s first session, and for us to create a client file for your child to send appointment reminders and submit Medicare rebates (if applicable).
