Information for referrers.
We are here to provide options and support for your clients. We endeavour to provide exceptional and highly personalised service to each of our clients, and work alongside referees to support clients.
Below is some information that might answer any questions you might have about the referral process and navigating the therapeutic journey alongside Immersive.
What kinds of referrals do we receive?
We welcome referrals for children, adolescents and adults seeking support for eating disorders / disordered eating, trauma, neurodevelopmental assessment, diagnosis, and therapeutic support, and general mental health concerns.
- Children, Adolescents, and adults.
- Individuals, couples, families.
- NDIS, and DVA welcome.
- Telehealth and Face to face
Our team of psychologists are experienced in eating disorders and body image issues, trauma, and neurodiversity, and across a range of general mental health conditions unique to each practitioner.
For an overview of each clinicians’ areas of special interest please see our “Meet the team” handout attached for your reference below; and for a deeper insight, please visit each individual clinician’s profile on our Team page.
If you’re still not sure which clinician might be most suitable, please feel free to call our Client Liaison and Clinical Engagement team to discuss your client’s needs in detail.
Private Referrals
Clients can visit Immersive without a referral. However, it is always preferred that a referral letter be provided, even if it is brief. A referral letter will help us to understand the rationale for the referral and ensure that we welcome the client to our service in an informed and thorough way.
Referrals under Medicare
If a client wishes to claim Medicare (or other insurance) rebates, they will need a referral from their GP, Psychiatrist, or Paediatrician. To refer a client to our practice under Medicare, you will need to provide us with two (2) things:
1. Referral Letter: Please provide a written Referral Letter, which outlines the following:
- The reason for referral; and
- Details of the client’s presentation.
2. Copy of Treatment Plan: Please ALSO provide a COPY of the clients Medicare treatment plan, e.g.:
- Mental Health Care Plan, or
- Eating Disorder Treatment Plan, or
- Chronic Disease Management Plan.
Please make sure your client meets the following criteria:
- They are physiologically stable as verified by their GP/psychiatrist/paediatrician;
- They have a BMI over 16 (or as appropriate for adolescents)
- Are not activity experiencing psychosis
Clients that are suitable for treatment within a community-based setting such as ours are those that are physiologically well-enough to engage meaningfully. When our clients’ brains and bodies are significantly malnourished, it may be unsafe to care for them in a setting that does not have the capacity to medically intervene. In these cases, the ‘right place’ for client care is a more intensive treatment setting such as an intensive outpatient or inpatient service attached to a hospital/medical centre.
If you’re not sure, you’re always welcome to reach out to us, or alternatively, consider calling WAEDOCS for advice.
If you are referring your client under an Eating Disorder Treatment Plan, please make sure you:
- Consider also providing your client with a referral for:
- Dietetic intervention/therapy.
- Psychiatric (or Paediatric) consultation, so as to meet the requirements of the 20-session review.
Medical Monitoring
When caring for clients with eating disorders, it is very often a team effort. In most cases, we need to defer to the client’s GP to regularly monitor their physiological health as we navigate recovery. In the initial stages of therapy this can be as frequently as weekly, tapering off as recovery evolves.
- What to monitor:
- We have attached a handout below which describes what we will ask you to monitor.
- How to communicate your findings:
- We have also attached a monitoring form for you to complete on a regular basis and send back to us. We are also happy to receive client observations in whatever format you have prepared them.
