Children + Adolescents Support
Children, Adolescents & Family Support
Growing up today is not simple. Children and adolescents are navigating constant change, socially, emotionally, and developmentally, while also managing increasing pressure from school, peers, and the world around them.
At Immersive Psychology Group in Perth based in Subiaco, we support children, adolescents, and their families through these challenges with care that is thoughtful, evidence-based, and grounded in genuine understanding.
When a young person is struggling, it rarely sits in isolation. It affects the whole family. Our approach reflects that. We work with both the child and the system around them to create meaningful, lasting change.
Our psychologists are trauma-trained and experienced in working with children and adolescents from age 4 and up. We offer developmentally appropriate therapies including EMDR for children, play and schema therapy, and family-informed approaches tailored to each young person. We also offer a range of assessments for diagnosis and NDIS support.
How Therapy Works
We take a collaborative, family-centred approach to therapy.
For younger children, the first session is usually held with parents or caregivers (depending on age and circumstances). This allows us to understand your child’s history, current concerns, and the broader context of their life.
We encourage parents to remain actively involved throughout the process. Children benefit most when the adults around them feel supported, informed, and confident in how to help.
Depending on your child’s needs, sessions may include individual therapy, parent sessions, joint parent–child sessions, and collaboration with schools or other professionals.
Therapy may be short-term and focused, or longer-term, depending on what is needed to create meaningful change.
What We Support
Our Perth child and adolescent psychologists support a wide range of emotional, behavioural, and developmental concerns.
We commonly work with children and teens experiencing anxiety, stress, low mood, and depression, as well as emotional regulation difficulties and trauma-related responses.
We support identity development and life transitions, including challenges related to neurodiversity such as ADHD and autism, as well as broader developmental and learning differences.
We regularly help young people navigate school-related concerns, including school refusal, ATAR stress, academic pressure, and peer difficulties such as bullying or social withdrawal.
We also work with behavioural challenges, including impulsivity, anger, and risk-taking behaviours, as well as concerns related to self-esteem, sleep, and overall wellbeing.
Body image concerns and disordered eating are increasingly common in young people. We provide early intervention and ongoing support, and where needed, work as part of a multidisciplinary team for eating disorder care.
Our Approach
Our work is grounded in evidence-based therapies, adapted to suit each child’s developmental stage and individual needs.
This includes play therapy for younger children, cognitive behavioural approaches, EMDR and schema therapy adapted for children and adolescents, and practical strategies to support emotional regulation and resilience.
We also place a strong emphasis on parent support. Therapy is not just about what happens in the room, it is about equipping families with the understanding and tools to support their child in everyday life. We encourage parents to also engage with their own individual support during this period, for self-care and sustainability. Immersive can offer in house support, or provide external referrals to appropriate services.
Our goal is to support deep, meaningful change by addressing the underlying drivers of distress, not just surface-level symptoms.
Assessments for Children & Adolescents
We offer comprehensive psychological assessments face to face in Perth to better understand your child’s strengths, challenges, and support needs.
ADHD and autism assessments are conducted using structured, evidence-based tools that consider behaviour across home, school, and social environments. These assessments can support diagnosis where appropriate and guide targeted intervention.
Cognitive assessments help identify learning strengths and difficulties, providing valuable insight for educational planning and support.
Emotional and behavioural assessments are useful when concerns are less clear, helping to understand what may be contributing to a child’s distress and guiding effective treatment.
For more detailed information about each assessment type, including what is involved and how to get started, we encourage you to explore our full range of services on our Services page.
Working Together
Supporting a child or adolescent often requires more than one approach. We work collaboratively with families, schools, and other health professionals where needed to ensure consistent and supportive care.
Our intake team will take the time to understand your concerns and match you with a psychologist who is the right fit for your child and your family.
